The old Alvastra Abbey, at the foot of Omberg, Östergötland, Sweden. May 2012
Founded in 1143, by french monks, it was the first cistercian abbey in Scandinavia.
It was torn down during the protestant reformation in about 1530. The stones from the abbey has been used in the building of several castles in and close to the area.
Today, there is a modern abbey just a few kilometers from here.

Stunningly beautiful. The colours of the grass and stone complement each other so well. The light and shadow show all the depth and beauty of the arches. Cleverly done. Thanks for making it available. My first photo of Sweden too.
